The Spanish artist Antonio López painted this view of Madrid’s Gran Via from life during innumerable sessions across seven years, which were brief enough to avoid the natural changes in the light.

In the preceding years, the art of Antonio Lopez had shed the magical or fantastic elements which marked his beginnings, evolving towards a demanding realism with a contemporary spirit. The painter reveals, through his sensitive gaze, the phenomenological density of the commonest objects and the busiest streets, but without them losing a shred of their everyday nature.

Such is the case with this Gran Via, which forces us to contemplate it —even if we walk it every day— with a new way of looking, as if seeing it for the first time.
